ChowFlex Halal Guide
The UK's most thorough halal verification system for a home cook platform. Three tiers, clearly explained.
ChowFlex has a three-tier halal certification system because we understand that "halal" means different things to different Muslims. Some are satisfied with a cook's own declaration. Others require third-party certification. Our system respects all positions clearly and transparently.
Cook-Declared Halal
The cook has confirmed all of the following in their profile settings:
- All meat is purchased from a halal-certified butcher or supplier
- No pork or pork derivatives are used or stored in the kitchen
- No alcohol is used as an ingredient in any dish
- No shared utensils or surfaces with non-halal cooking without thorough cleaning
HFA Certified
The cook holds a current certificate from the Halal Food Authority (HFA), one of the UK's most recognised halal certification bodies. ChowFlex has verified the certificate is current and valid.
HFA certification audits the cook's supply chain and cooking processes. It permits controlled electric stunning for poultry and ovine meat. It is accepted by the vast majority of UK Muslims and by major supermarkets and restaurant chains.
HMC Certified
The cook holds a current certificate from the Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC), which holds the strictest halal standard in the UK and is recognised by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).
HMC requires hand slaughter only (no stunning of any kind) and audits the entire supply chain from farm to plate. HMC-certified cooks appear first in halal-filtered search results on ChowFlex.
Note on vegetarian dishes
Even if you only cook vegetarian dishes, you can still hold a halal declaration. Many Muslim customers filter for halal not just for meat concerns, but to avoid alcohol-based sauces, gelatine, and cross-contamination. If your dishes contain no animal products, consider adding a halal declaration to reach this audience.
